Website or Google Business Profile: what should you prioritise locally?
A framework for making your website and Google Business Profile work together, based on your most urgent business obstacle.

Key points
- - Your profile captures local intent; your website explains and persuades.
- - First fix inconsistencies that create doubt.
- - Connect each important service to a genuinely useful page.
Two places, complementary roles
Your Google Business Profile gives quick answers: business type, address, hours, reviews, phone number and directions. Your website takes over when visitors want to understand a service, compare options, see your work or check whether your business fits their situation.
Treating them as alternatives creates a false choice. A visible profile linking to a confusing website loses trust. An excellent website paired with an incomplete profile misses some local demand.
Start where trust breaks down
If your name, hours, phone number or service area differ between platforms, correct them before running a campaign. If your profile already gets views but few actions, improve its categories, services, photos and reviews. If visitors open your website without getting in touch, work on the message, evidence and contact journey.
This approach avoids paying for more traffic to an experience that does not yet answer the essential questions.
- Consistent name, phone number, hours and service area everywhere
- A primary category that reflects your actual business
- Recent, representative photos
- Dedicated pages for your key services
- A visible contact action that works on mobile
Create continuity between Google and your website
A service listed on your profile should use the same wording on its landing page. That page explains the problem you solve, your approach, your service area, the evidence available and the next action. It should not be an artificial repetition of keywords.
For businesses serving several distinct needs, a few substantial pages are more useful than one long general page that mixes everything together. Each page should be worth reading and help someone make a real decision.
Measure what brings you closer to a customer
Track calls, enquiries, direction requests and forms, rather than impressions alone. Also note enquiry quality: the service requested, location, urgency and your ability to help. More traffic without relevant enquiries is not a business success.
Review the questions you receive by phone each month. They reveal missing information on your profile or website and provide more useful content ideas than generic topics.
